Once occupied by Romans and recorded in Domesday, the ancient estate of Wyken is quintessential Suffolk: country lanes, hedgerows, patchwork fields and woodlands.

Wyken is a 1200-acre farm which includes a flock of Shetland sheep, a small herd of Red Poll cattle and a 7-acre vineyard producing award-winning wines, including the English Wine of the Year.

The vineyard restaurant, The Leaping Hare, is located in our 400-year-old barn.  A Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide and now in its 15th year in The Good Food Guide, the restaurant serves meat and game from the estate, fresh fish from Lowestoft and seasonal vegetables grown locally.

The Leaping Hare Country Store, a treasure house described in Country Living as a ‘model of what a shop should be’ sells design-led crafts, quilts and braided rugs from North Carolina, and has a book-lovers bookshop.

The gardens at Wyken Hall surround the Elizabethan manor house and are open from the 27th March  until the end of September 2pm to 6pm. (Closed Saturdays)

The Wyken Farmers’ market is held every Saturday from 9am to 1pm.  ‘One of my Top Ten Farmers’ Markets in the Country’, Henrietta Green.


One of The East Anglian Daily Times ‘Restaurant of the Year’.  Where possible we try to source our ingredients from a five-mile radius, so our beef and lamb are local and when possible from Wyken.  Wild game … venison, pheasant, partridge, rabbit and pigeon are from the estate and fruit, herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden as well as from Phil of Langham Herbs who is in the Farmers’ Market every Saturday.  And naturally our own wine, the vineyard is a couple hundred yards from the restaurant, but we also have a selection of 30 guest wines from our winemaking friends around the world.

The restaurant is open for lunch every day from 12am until 2pm and on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm until 9pm.  For a reservation please call 01359 250 287.


The café opens every day at 10am (9am on Saturdays) for breakfast or coffee and a bistro style menu is available in the café between 12 and 3.30pm.  In the afternoons we serve tea and coffee and light dishes and Wyken’s famous cakes.

Planted in 1988 on a south facing slope reckoned to have been the site of a Roman vineyard, the vines thrive on the sandy loam over chalk.

Wines include:

Wyken Bacchus, winner of the 'English Wine of the Year', and in 2009 East Anglian Wine of the Year.

Wyken Moonshine, our sparkling wine 'A wow! and it gets better and better.' Hugh Johnson.

Wyken White, a perfect wine, off dry and welcoming, and our first screw cap.

Wyken Madeleine Angevine, citrus fruits on the nose with a dry, buttery finish.  Good with fish and seafood.

As major growers of malting barley, we began making our own beer in 2005.  Good Dog Ale: Make You Want to Sit and Stay. A low-fizz ale that is delicious with food.

Formal gardens crammed with topiary, herbs, roses, box, fruit trees -- and meandering peacocks, guinea fowl and chickens -- snuggle up to the Elizabethan manor house, with head-high yew hedges serving as windbreaks, essential in East Anglia, a region renowned for its 'lazy winds'.

Starred in the Good Gardens Guide and featured in Gardens Illustrated, The English Garden and COUNTRY LIFE, the garden at Wyken has evolved over thirty years.

Open from 27th March until the end of September, 2p.m. until 6p.m. everyday except Saturday.

Carla Carlisle

When she married Kenneth Carlisle in 1986, Carla's dowry consisted of a labrador named Adam and an apocalyptic vision of the future of English farming.  It was that gloomy prospect that led her to plant a vineyard that now produced some of the best wines in England and to convert the 400-year-old barn into a vineyard restaurant and country store.
